LUNA Mobile has secured a worldwide patent licensing agreement with Microsoft that allows LUNA to be covered under Microsoft’s massive patent portfolio in exchange for a reasonable royalty. The two years of negotiations with Microsoft resulted in a licensing agreement that is a major milestone for LUNA, and a powerful, preemptive strike against future infringement cases by other mobile companies.
Microsoft is one of the largest patent holders in the mobile phone industry today. Microsoft owns approximately 8,500 mobile phone-related patents issued around the world, including patents for the underlying code on which Google’s Android platform is based.
“LUNA Mobile is at an exciting place right now, and its partnership with Microsoft on patents will usher in the kind of innovation needed to deliver enhanced features and user experiences for customers all over the world.”
- Nick Psyhogeos, President of Microsoft Technology Licensing
The patent agreement is another example of the important role intellectual property (IP) plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant technology ecosystem. Since Microsoft launched its IP licensing program in December 2003, it has entered into more than 1,200 licensing agreements.
